Fairview's Ella Douglas nominated for Scottish Care Awards

Ella Douglas, laundry assistant at HC-One’s Fairview Care Home in Bannockburn, Stirling, has been announced as a finalist for the Scottish Care Awards.

Ella is a finalist for the Ancillary & Support Staff Award, which recognises care home support staff who ‘demonstrate excellence in their job’ and ‘make a significant contribution to the overall care provision’, and those who take special pride in their work.

Ella started working at Fairview in December 2013, having left her previous job to look after her mother after she developed Alzheimer’s. On returning to work, Ella wanted to continue supporting and caring for people, so working at Fairview was a perfect fit.

The key to Ella’s success is good organisation in ensuring that Residents have clean and fresh clothes and bedding every day, and working closely with Residents’ families to make sure that their every need is met. Ella loves seeing the Residents smile, and this motivates her to continue providing the best service she can.

Fairview Care Home is operated by HC-One, the country’s third-largest provider of residential care for older people.

Ella Douglas, Laundry Assistant at Fairview Care Home said:

“I feel very humbled to have been nominated for this award, and I am excited about attending the awards ceremony! I always try and do my best to ensure that the Residents here at Fairview are comfortable and happy, and it is very touching to think that my work is appreciated so much.”

Liz Whyte, Managing Director at HC-One said:

“We are delighted that Ella has received a well-deserved nomination for the Scottish Care Awards, and we wish her all the best at the awards ceremony. At HC-One we are very proud of the great work carried out by our dedicated colleagues who go above and beyond the call of duty to provide the kindest care to residents, and we are very happy to see them receive such high praise and recognition.”

MPs, Mayors and Councillors join HC-One Care Homes across the country for Harvest Festival celebrations

17 October 2016
MPs, Mayors and Councillors join HC-One Care Homes across the country for Harvest Festival celebrations

Over 30 MPs, Councillors and Mayors joined Residents and relatives at HC-One care homes across the country as they opened their doors to celebrate the Harvest Festival on Thursday 6th October 2016.

The homes welcomed members of the local community as part of their Harvest Festival celebrations. Many homes were joined by their MP, Councillor and/or Mayor as the care home hosted a range of exciting activities including arts and crafts and entertainment from local singers.

A key part of the day was the distribution of the home’s Harvest collection to elderly neighbours. The home also held fundraising activities for HC-One’s charity partner The Silver Line, the total amount raised is currently being finalised.

The Silver Line is the only free, national, confidential helpline open every day and night, offering information, friendship and advice to older people. HC-One recently announced a £100,000 donation to the charity, which will cover the costs of 20,000 calls to the helpline.

Harvest Festival is an annual celebration to mark the end of the main Harvest season, and a time to give thanks for the crop that has been grown. Traditionally it is a time when people share collected food items with those in need in their local community.

HC-One currently has the highest compliance rating of all independent residential care home providers. HC-One is also celebrating achieving a 9.4/10 average rating on the sector’s leading care home comparison website carehome.co.uk. The high rating demonstrates HC-One is one of the best companies in the care home sector as rated by service users.

HC-One People Development Programmes Awarded Centre of Excellence Status by Skills for Care

11 October 2016

HC-One’s People Development programmes have been awarded Centre of Excellence status by Skills for Care, recognising that they demonstrate exemplary learning and development for their staff.

There are only six other Skills for Care Centres of Excellence in the UK, and the HC-One People Development Team is only one of two in-house training providers, the other being The Royal Mencap Society. Skills for Care describe the Care Centre of Excellence status as:

A Centre of Excellence has demonstrated exemplary learning and development provision, exhibited innovation and continual development and can prove they've delivered high quality improvement to the services they work with. They can also show full commitment to the Leadership Qualities Framework.

The status also demonstrates that HC-One offer high quality learning and development programmes, specifically for social care and that all their learning has been through a sector specific quality assurance process. The inspection team were impressed with the team’s programme content, its relevance to the diverse care delivered and the importance of evidencing learning through outcomes for Resident care and with each other.

This Skills for Care accreditation highlights HC-One’s commitment to the development of its staff and ensuring there are opportunities for all. HC-One has been developing bespoke programmes for its staff ever since the company’s creation in 2011 and in that time have gained recognition as delivering ‘best practice in-house development programmes and opportunities’ for those who work with them to deliver the kindest care. HC-One’s touch programmes which provide tailored personal development solutions to HC-One staff, has won eight top sector awards.

HC-One’s Director of People Development, Alison Innes-Farquhar said:

“We are thrilled that our in-house learning and development programme has been recognised by Skills for Care as a Centre of Excellence.

“By developing our colleagues in our bespoke way, we are able to continue to attract and develop the best people to our Homes, to provide the kindest care to all of our Residents. We are proud to deliver such high quality and engaging learning programmes for a stable group of well supported and highly professional colleagues.”

Chai Patel, Chairman of HC-One said:

“We are delighted that our People and Development programme has been awarded Centre of Excellence status and are honoured that HC-One has been recognised as a great place for personal development and an organisation that invests in the futures of its staff. Our colleagues are at the cornerstone of HC-One and we want to do as much as we can to help them develop their careers, and deliver the kindest care.

“We are very proud of the multi-award winning training and career development programme, which is in use across all HC-One homes. Gaining this status is a wonderful recognition that our programmes generate meaningful and valuable outcomes for both staff and Residents. Harvest Festival supporting The Silver Line

06 October 2016
Harvest Festival supporting The Silver Line

We’re delighted invite you to this year’s Harvest Festival Celebrations which take place on Thursday 6th October 2016.

Harvest Festival has become a regular feature in the HC-One Care Home calendar as it allows us to open our doors and welcome our community into our home. A number of our Residents find it increasingly more difficult to access the community due to physical frailty so this event enables us to bring the community to them.

Amongst the invitees to Harvest Festival are children and teachers from local primary schools, members of key local community groups, residents who live locally in sheltered housing schemes and people that have enquired about care in our homes over recent months.

Celebrations to mark the harvest will include;

  • Harvest themed activities

  • Refreshments

  • Craft displays

  • Meet new friends from the community

  • Distribution of our harvest collection to elderly neighbours

  • Fundraising activities for The Silver Line

This year’s Harvest Festival is in support of “The Silver Line” a free confidential helpline providing information, companionship and advice to older people. They also offer fantastic volunteer and pen-pal services to help them relationships outside of the home.  We will be celebrating the harvest with an array of activities and food collections.

Building ongoing links with community groups remains important to our Residents; we hold regular coffee mornings which welcome in the community; so if you aren’t able to join our Harvest Festival we would welcome you to attend.

We really hope that you can come along and join us in our celebrations and make the day a real community event!

Rose Court is Walking for Dementia

29 September 2016
Rose Court is Walking for Dementia

HC-One’s Rose Court Care Home in Radcliffe, Bury had a great day supporting the Alzheimer’s Society by completing a memory walk in Heaton Park on 17th September.

Every year Memory Walks around the country take place which sees thousands of people raising money for a world without dementia.  People of all ages and abilities can join in; some even take their dogs along to complete the walk.

It is estimated by the Alzheimer’s Society that over 850,000 people in the UK live with dementia.  Dementia is a term given to a group of symptoms, most commonly caused by Alzheimer’s disease and includes memory loss, communication problems and severe changes in mood.

After taking part in a warm up dance, Residents and carers took to the start line.  The sun was shining and the first pit stop was used to buy ice-creams all around.  The Residents enjoyed walking around the lake and talking to other walkers but most of all, they enjoyed crossing the finishing line and receiving their medals which they wore with pride.

Other Manchester based HC-One homes Meadowbank House, Kings Park, Worsley Lodge and Brookdale View along with Cheshire based Appleton Manor also completed memory walks with proceeds raised by all going to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Rose Court Care Home is also celebrating achieving a 9.6 (out of a possible 10) average rating on the sector’s leading care home comparison website carehome.co.uk which places them 1st in the district. The high rating puts the home into the very best company in the care home sector, committed to providing kind care to Residents.

Karen Davies, Rose Court Care Home Manager, said: “Our Residents had such a wonderful time.  The sun was shining and everyone managed to make it to the finish line.  We’re very proud of each of them and what they have achieved.”

HC-One Managing Director Glen Mason, said: “Rose Court’s dementia walk sounds great!  Organising memorable events like this is an important part of how HC-One provides the kindest care.”

HC-One Provides £100,000 Boost To The Silver Line's National Appeal

08 September 2016
HC-One Provides £100,000 Boost To The Silver Line's National Appeal

HC-One, the UK’s third largest care home provider, has announced a £100,000 donation to The Silver Line in the week that the charity received its one millionth call.

The HC-One Foundation is a Founding Partner of The Silver Line and previously donated £150,000 to the older people’s helpline as part of this programme.

The Silver Line (0800 4 70 80 90) is the only free, national, confidential helpline open every day and night, offering information, friendship and advice to older people.

Just days after receiving its one millionth call The Silver Line launched an urgent appeal to raise £1.65million to keep its vital night time service going. HC-One’s new donation of £100,000 will go towards the national appeal

Over two-thirds of calls to the helpline are at night and weekends, and The Silver Line’s research shows that over half of all callers say they have no one else to speak to.

HC-One’s £100,000 donation will cover the cost of    20,000 calls to the helpline. As the only member of the Founding Partner programme from the care sector, HC-One is leading the way in supporting The Silver Line’s Million Calls appeal.

HC-One’s Chairman, Dr Chai Patel, has a long history of philanthropy and he has imbued this charitable spirit into HC-One’s philosophy and its support of The Silver Line.

HC-One is dedicated to providing the kindest care for every Resident and developing each home’s relationship with their local community. It is proud to support The Silver Line as the charity is specifically for older people, providing them with support and a friendly voice to talk to.

Dame Esther Rantzen, Founder of The Silver Line, said:

“I knew there was a need for the helpline but to answer one million calls in such a short space of time is desperately sad.

“Our callers tell us that nights can be the worst times of all when they really need someone to talk to and confide in.

“We’re really grateful for this amazing donation from HC-One which will go towards helping us to keep the vital night-time service going.

“We urgently need more donations from wonderful friends and supporters, like HC-One - who are doing so much to ensure we are always there for the people who need us most.”

Dr Chai Patel, Chairman of HC-One, said:

“We know that too many older people are affected by loneliness, and The Silver Line shows there is an effective solution to tackle isolation.

“HC-One is very proud to support The Silver Line’s national appeal with a donation that will pay for 20,000 calls. That’s 20,000 times people will be able to access the companionship and support they need.

“HC-One are delighted to be part of such an important project, and playing an active role in our local community.”
