100 birthday candles at Huddersfield care homeCelebrations were in full swing at HC-One’s The Oakes care home in Huddersfield as Resident Joan was thrown a special party for her 100th birthday.

Born in Knottingley, Yorkshire on 8th October 1919, Joan Marlow enjoyed a 20-year-long career as a Medical Records Officer at Pontefract General Infirmary, before becoming a care supervisor in a retirement home for 5 years.

Joan married husband Douglas, with whom she had one daughter, two sons, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren with.

In her spare time, Joan enjoyed visiting her holiday home and being an active member of the Ladies’ Society and Women’s Institute, as well as volunteering for Help the Aged for 24 years of her life.

When asked what her secret is to a long and happy life, Joan said it was down to being active, spending time with her friends and enjoying a regular tipple.

Joan was delighted when staff at The Oakes threw her a celebratory 100th birthday party at the home, as she was joined by her friends, family and fellow Residents.

The Oakes’ village store was decorated with birthday bunting, balloons and beautiful cards as Joan opened her telegram from the Queen and was presented with a delicious pink cake.

Macheala Parker, Home Manager at The Oakes, said: “At HC-One, we are committed to helping our Residents celebrate their special occasions in the best way possible.

“Joan is a lovely lady and such an inspiration to the whole team at The Oakes, as well as her fellow Residents. It was amazing for our team to help her celebrate such a milestone day alongside her family and friends.”
