Duchess of Cornwall joins Treharris care home Residents for royally good poetry afternoonResidents at HC-One’s Trafalgar Park care home in Treharris, Caerphilly were delighted to join Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, for a delicious afternoon tea as part of a Poetry Together initiative.

The care home partnered with Lewis School, Pengam for the Poetry Together project, which joins groups of school children and older people together to recite a poem they have learned by heart. Founded by Gyles Brandreth, the initiative aims to enhance speaking, reading and writing amongst children and strengthens relationships and memory for older adults.

Trafalgar Park Residents Sandra Purnell and Gerald Mogford were greeted by English writer and former MP, Gyles Brandreth, upon arrival to Eaton Square School for the exciting event.

Once seated, guests were overjoyed to welcome the Duchess of Cornwall to the event, before school pupils were joined by their newfound friends from the older generation to perform the poetry they had learned together.

Students from the school recited a poem called Friendship written by Beryl Jones, a Resident at Trafalgar Park, which described the relationships that Beryl has with her friends.

After the performances had finished, attendees were invited to enjoy a delicious afternoon tea with the Duchess of Cornwall, as they had the opportunity to introduce themselves to her and ask her questions.

Hayley de la Vega-zabala, Wellbeing Coordinator at Trafalgar Park, said: “Our Residents were honoured to have been included in the Poetry Together initiative, as this has provided them with an additional yet unique way of connecting with the local community.

“The event has been an amazing experience for all who took part, as residents have demonstrated their creative flair and reignited their love for poetry. Meeting Camilla was the certainly the highlight of the day for many at Trafalgar Park.”
