Glo germ kit helps Rotherham care home Residents improve hand hygieneColleagues at HC-One’s Silverwood care home in Rotherham have been helping Residents with infection control by utilising the Glo germ kit, which incentivises hand washing.

Silverwood care home Colleagues have been doing a lot of work in regards to infection control in the home to halt the spread of the coronavirus. The infection control leads came across the ‘Glo germ’ kit which helps improve handwashing.

First, Residents and Colleagues coat both hands with a liquid which stimulates germs. After that, a black light is then shone onto the surface of the skin which exposes all the germs on the hand. The next step is to wash your hands following the normal procedure and then rechecking the skin with the light to see if all the germs had been washed away.

Silverwood care home Resident Joan had a go with the kit and manage to wash all of the germs from her hands, “I am very proud that I passed the hand washing procedure,” said Joan.

Colleagues from Silverwood care home also had a go of the kit and thought it was a great activity to share between Residents and Colleagues and eventually Relatives when they can visit again, to improve hand hygiene around the home.

Carrie Davies, Silverwood Home Manager said: “What a great idea to involve everyone and spread awareness of good practices. A visual outcome is always reassuring.”
