A Resident who is celebrating her 100th birthday next month has been overwhelmed with community spirit and support after a Colleague asked people in the local area to send her a birthday card to HC-One’s Averill House care home in Newton Heath.
Marjorie Burke turns 100 on April 4. With the incredible milestone birthday in mind, Averill House Wellbeing Coordinator Jodie Yates asked the community to make Marjorie a card to try and total 100 birthday wishes.
After the request took off on social media, the home has been inundated with birthday cards and other generous donations; a complete surprise for Marjorie next month when she enjoys her afternoon tea party.
Mavis McDougall, a Resident at the home, said: “This will be such a lovely surprise for Marjorie!”
The home has already received an incredible number of cards but they have even received other very generous donations. Local businesses have offered to supply balloons and cupcakes for the big day while a birthday cake is being made for her by a bakery where Marjorie used to work.
She has also been gifted an outside dining dome and party package worth over £400 by Party to Perfection for Marjorie’s grand afternoon tea celebrations.
The birthday card drive was organised by Jodie Yates, a Wellbeing Coordinator at Averill House, but she never dreamed it would take off like it has. Now she cannot wait to share all the wonderful cards and gifts with Marjorie next month on her big day.
Jodie said: “I am astounded by the sheer generosity of people in our community. The kindness they are showing is heart-warming. All our staff really want to make this a special occasion for Marjorie as it’s not every day you turn 100!”
