May news from Bolton care homePlenty has been going on this week at HC-One’s Meadow Bank House care home, which offers residential and nursing care. From celebrating nurses to renovating the home, and everything in between.

On 30th April, the home celebrated ‘Dutch Day’. The wellbeing coordinators brought the Netherlands to Meadow Bank House and explored the Dutch culture by looking at its traditions, language, history and current affairs.

Residents, including Maureen, Sheila, Bernard, John, Savitaben, Mary, Rose Ellen and Joyce shared travel stories and tasted snacks such as Stroop Waffle, Kaas (Cheese) and Beschuit. Residents were able to have the Stroop Waffle in its traditional way by placing the biscuit on top of their hot drink. This softens the caramel and makes it extra tasty.

Betty, who lives at the home, chatted, “I went to Amsterdam for my 21st birthday and that was the first time I had these biscuits; it brings back so many memories.”

Colleagues then created a fun activity pack full of word searches, crosswords and fun trivia for Residents, based on everything to do with the Netherlands.

One of the wellbeing Colleagues said, “The highlight was seeing everyone enjoying themselves and looking forward to where we could possibly go next. It felt as if it ended too quickly. Next month we will bring another country to Meadow Bank House.”

Currently, the home is on a mission to brighten up the indoors and outdoors. With Summer around the corner the wellbeing team and Residents have been painting the Wooden Gazebo to a beautiful pastel blue colour.

Audrey, Margaret and Kenneth (pictured), all contributed to the project. Kenneth was extremely good at painting, initially he wanted to just do it for a few minutes but he really got into it!

On 6th May Residents had a double celebration! A pre VE Day party and their favourite entertainer Deborah the singer has officially come back for her first gig in 13 months, under the new covid guidelines.

Deborah has a great connection with the Residents and she got to see so many new faces too! it was so amazing that the Residents were left wanting more. She noticed that Resident Mike had a beautiful singing voice and commented, “Next time I’m here, I will bring an extra microphone for you!”

Everyone enjoyed the lovely union jack cupcakes that were created by a lovely lady called Dawn (the auntie of Amber who works on the admin team) and hot drinks. Dawn has her own small cupcake business and donated these cupcakes completely free of charge in order to be a part of creating a special day for the Residents.

Another celebration this week was International Nurses Day where a few of the Residents (Andora, Ellen, Elsie, Irene, Rose and Joyce) wanted to show their appreciation to the nurses that work extremely hard to look after them with a personalized card for National Nurse day.

Andora commented, “Thank you for being so kind,” which she wrote in her card to Nurse Yvette.

Residents enjoyed creating paper flowers with colourful tracing paper.

Jane Green, Care Home Manager, remarked, “What a busy few days we have had at Meadow Bank and it has been full of smiles, positivity and celebrations. I am excited to see what is in store for the next few weeks.”
