Eastbourne care home Residents celebrate Chinese Language DayResidents at HC-One’s Elstree Court care home in Eastbourne celebrated Chinese Language Day this year with an armchair travel afternoon and some lovely Chinese food.

The national day is to pay tribute to Cangjie, a mythical figure who is presumed to have invented Chinese characters about 5,000 years ago. Firstly, Residents enjoyed an armchair travel to China.

During the session, Residents learned about the history of China, looked at the architecture and travelled the Great Wall of China. After, Residents talked about rice, tea, food and travel which are attributed to China.

Then, Colleagues treated Residents to some lovely spring rolls and learned how to write the numbers: one to ten in Chinese characters. As well as this, everyone practiced a bit of Mandarin and introduced each other in Mandarin within the group.

“It is good to learn something new. It's excellent to be able to do armchair travel, where are we going next?” asked one Residents.

Elstree Court Home Manager Yolanda De Castro said: “The day worked so well, armchair travel was a brilliant idea, everyone seemed submerged into the activities of the day.”

Located in Meads Village, just outside Eastbourne, Elstree Court is a friendly care home with 41 beds, offering nursing and residential care.
