Preparation for Remembrance Day at Droylsden’s residential and residential memory care home,
Sunnyside, have been taking place.
On 3rd and 4th of November, Residents including George Wooliscroft, Hazel Wright (pictured), Valerie Rice and Walter Almquest, made poppy wreaths, and individual poppies. They also had a quiz about the war and talked about the Second World War, including their memories of being in the forces. Some remember having to go into air raid shelters, as they listened to the bombs dropping around them.
Residents talked about knitting and crocheting poppies, for friends and families before the paper ones were available. The memories were happy and sad, and all Residents hope there will never be another war on the scale of the first and second World War.
Everyone involved really enjoyed painting the poppies and seeing the wreaths come together. One Resident remarked, “I enjoyed painting the poppies, and remembering our soldiers that died for us.”
Kay Harrison, Care Home Manager, commented, “It was lovely to hear all the Residents talk about their days in the forces. Everyone expressed delight about the day the war ended.”
