The resident chickens and rooster at HC-One’s Catherine House care home, in Frome are growing so fast now!
Colleagues have had to get a chicken coup built ready for them to go into the courtyard, where they will live out their lives surrounded by Residents who enjoy the company of animals. This coup was donated by one of the Residents, Sheila Rose, who used to rear chickens when she was younger and asked Colleagues at the home to let her get it for us.
The chicks are now looking forward to taking a trip to the vets to be tagged, get their wings clipped and have their first injections.
Other Residents including John Lane, Neil Fowler, Malcolm Wheeler and Gladys Ellis have taken upon themselves to keep a close eye on the chickens. Gladys loves making sure they are covered at night and all ready for bed, saying, “Come on chickens it’s time for bed.”
The men enjoy filling the water and feed and trying not to let them escape in the process.
Also, the chickens are handled every other day and Residents like being able to have the chickens out on their laps. They enjoy the responsibility of having something to look after and care for.
