Lincoln Colleagues shortlisted at the Great British Care AwardsPaula Sellars, Deputy Manager, and Karen Farrow, Senior Housekeeper, at HC-One’s Altham Court care home in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, a 46-bed residential and nursing care home, have been shortlisted for awards at the Great British Care Awards 2022 for the East Midlands region. 

The nomination for the award is in recognition of their hard work and kind care shown to Residents, Relatives and Colleagues as well as the dedication and passion they show every day to ensure the people she supports receive the best quality care.

Paula, who is nominated for The Good Nurse Award, is the Deputy Manager at the home but first and foremost she is a Nurse. Paula can balance the two roles very well and is a huge support to the home. She leads by example and will never ask anyone to do anything she is not willing to do herself. She has supported her fellow Nurses to take ownership and promoted confidence within the team and embraced their knowledge of the home and residents. Paula supports with supervisions and has created some wonderful displays for staff learning. Paula’s clinical knowledge is expanse but is always keen to learn more. 

Area Director, Margaret Barton, who nominated Paula for the award, said:
“Paula has transformed the treatment room into an organised space and every cupboard or box has a name tag and a place. She has implemented a full cleaning regime of all medical equipment and ensures it is done monthly. Daily, weekly and monthly tasks are delegated and when audits are completed the evidence is there that it is being done. Paula has developed some fantastic working relationships.”
“Paula encourages teamwork and arranged a Colleague from each team to work team building day for the Residents to watch. Residents and Colleagues gathered on the grass area outside of the care home, where two teams took part in a series of head-to-head activities which helped boost Colleague morale.”


Karen, who is nominated for the Ancillary Worker Award Category, has transformed the standards of hygiene at the home. Karen is the Infection, Prevention and Control link at the home. Karen leads her team by example, ensuring the home has a full supply of PPE and cleaning products and supports the Manager in providing daily information of stock levels. Karen is passionate about her team demonstrating this with her dedication to them, recognising their achievements, birthdays and supporting them when times are tough.  

Home Manager, Anna Livsey, who nominated Karen for the award, said:
“Karen leads her team with a firm but fair approach which is displayed by the respect she has from her team. She oversees the rotas and holds a meeting every morning with her team to discuss the daily tasks.”

The Great British Care Awards consist of 21 awards, which cover a wide range of areas of the social care sector. The awards are a series of regional events throughout the UK and are a celebration of distinction across the care sector. The awards pay tribute to those who have demonstrated outstanding excellence within their area of work. The award ceremony of the Great British Care Awards 2022, Regional Awards for the East Midlands region takes place at the East Midlands Conference Centre, Nottingham on Thursday 3rd November 2022 when the winners will be announced. Successful winners at the East Midlands regional awards will progress to the national finals of the Great British Care Awards 2023 taking place on Friday 17th March 2023 at the ICC in Birmingham.

In total six HC-One Colleagues have been shortlisted for the Great British Care Awards in the East Midlands.
