Marking the first day of March at Pennwood LodgeIt has been a busy start to March at Gloucestershire’s Pennwood Lodge care home, which offers residential and nursing dementia care, with both St David’s Day and Pancake Day to celebrate.

Residents celebrated St David’s Day with a morning of coffee and facts about Wales followed by a ‘Taste of Wales’ whereby Residents enjoyed some traditional dishes prepared by the home’s catering team throughout the day.

The dining room was decorated with different images of Wales and table mats showing the Welsh flag and the traditional symbols of Wales, which are daffodils and leeks. There were also fresh daffodils on the tables for everyone to admire.

Shelia and Pauline, who both live at the home, said that the daffodils were “Lovely.”

And Shelia went on to say, “It’s a little bit of fun and it was nice to be to be involved and taste some different food from different countries.”

Fellow Resident Terry Lennard, who is the home’s only Welsh Resident, really appreciated the posters which were in translated to Welsh.

Colleague Shannon Eldridge commented, “All the Residents thoroughly enjoyed the food, especially the Monmouth pie for dessert.”

To mark Pancake Day as well, staff and Residents celebrated with a demonstration of pancake making and flipping, which was of course followed by tasting with everyone’s favourite toppings. This included traditional sugar and lemon, mixed berry fruits and caramelised banana.

There was no overall favourite, but everyone enjoyed the activity, especially watching the home’s chef flip the pancakes.

Shannon added, “Residents enjoyed watching, smelling and tasting the pancakes as they were made.”
