HC-One’s Blakelands Lodge Care Home, in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire, where their beloved mascot is a beautiful Bee, marked World Bee Day on Tuesday, May 20, with an educational event.
Blakelands Lodge Care Home welcomed local beekeeper and Women’s Institute Speakers list member, Sue Lang, for an engaging talk that captivated residents, their families, and colleagues. Sue shared fascinating insights into the world of beekeeping, explaining the vital role bees play in maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting food security.
She brought along samples of delicious local honey, with the runny variety emerging as a crowd favourite over the set honey. The sunny afternoon in the care home’s garden provided the perfect backdrop for this memorable event that was filled with learning and laughter.
World Bee Day, observed every year on May 20, honours Anton Janša, a pioneer of modern beekeeping born in 1734 in Slovenia. The day raises awareness about the critical importance of bees and other pollinators, whose habitats face growing threats from human activities like habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change.

“I enjoyed my time with your residents and visitors this afternoon. We talked about where bees used to live and how we now manage them in modern box-like hives.
“Everyone tried the different honeys I brought along, and the runny honey was voted nicer than the set one. It was an enjoyable time for everyone, made even better by the sunshine and being outdoors.”
