At
Barton Brook residential, nursing and residential memory care home, in Eccles, everyone has had lots to celebrate including the upcoming Halloween season, as well as plenty of activities and even a birthday celebration.
Two members of the wellbeing team, Esme and Elly, came up with an idea to create a book with the kind of activities the Residents like to do, such as arts and crafts, exercises and games. Colleagues are combining this with research to explain how this activity helps Residents and are going to be involving all the Residents in the home.
Esme and Elly commented, “We started the book with Moss Community and their love of dancing. We researched the benefits of dancing in older people and wrote about this in the scrapbook too.”
The Residents enjoy doing projects like this as it gives them a sense of involvement in something important, whilst doing things they enjoy.
On 27th October the home welcomed an entertainer, Wayne Allen, to visit Betty and the other Residents. Betty was celebrating her 91st birthday and all involved enjoyed the music and a few danced with the staff and wellbeing team.
Betty enjoyed everyone singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to her.
Later in the day, a Halloween party commenced with cocktails and birthday cakes. All the Residents including Betty, Jack, Donald and Margaret, sat around a big table and said they had a lovely day.
Jack loved dancing with all the staff, Margaret danced and laughed throughout.
Residents danced, sang and clapped along to the music. The happiness of having a live entertainer was amazing and the mood of the unit stayed happy for the rest of the day. Staff also enjoyed being able to spend quality time with the Residents doing something fun and making memories.
The Residents said they had a fab day and loved it!
Andrea Stevens, Receptionist, said, “When having an entertainer coming into the home the mood is set for the rest of the day.”
