Surrey Care Home Resident Honoured at Royal VE Day Ceremony with King Charles

John Davies, a 102-year-old resident of HC-One's Adelaide House care home in Surrey, was among the distinguished guests at the national VE Day Commemorations in London on Monday, May 5th, 2025, where he attended an afternoon tea with King Charles and Queen Camilla at Buckingham Palace. The centenarian, accompanied by his granddaughter Kaija Gosling, was given prime seating for the military procession and RAF flypast during this historic event honouring the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day.

John, dressed in a navy blue jacket and glasses, joined veterans from across the United Kingdom at the prestigious ceremony, which was also attended by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and broadcast live to the nation. Fellow residents and staff at Adelaide House watched with excitement as they spotted their friend on television during the coverage.

Bronwyn Dobie, Wellbeing and Activity Lead at Adelaide House expressed;

In the days following the event, Adelaide House has been filled with enthusiasm as John shared his experiences with fellow residents. His granddaughter Kaija provided footage she captured during the day, allowing the Adelaide House community to relive the historic moments together.

The royal experience included an unforgettable afternoon tea at Buckingham Palace, where John and other veterans had the opportunity to speak with members of the Royal Family. The ceremony highlighted the nation's gratitude to the wartime generation while creating new memories for one of Adelaide House's most treasured residents.
