Wiltshire Residents experience the mystery of magicOn 18th February at Market Lavington care home in Devizes, which offers residential, nursing and residential dementia care, magic has been on the cards.

Wellbeing Coordinator Riaz Ali has been demonstrating some incredible magic tricks for Residents including making handkerchiefs disappear and reappear, multiplying balls under cups, cutting ropes in half and magically restoring them again, and pulling boxes of flowers from empty paper bags!

The Residents, including Angela Wakely, Douglas Murray, Margaret Tomalin, Phyllis Shellard, Sheila Henderson, Violet Lloyd, David Rowe and Ida Wearing, have enjoyed watching these tricks and Riaz also offered to teach them how to perform them, though he may get kicked out of the ‘Magic Circle’ for betraying their secrets!

A lovely morning and afternoon has been enjoyed by all, but it was just a shame Riaz couldn’t work his magic to make storm Eunice disappear too!

Douglas Murray, who lives at Market Lavington, commented, “These were all great! I’ve always enjoyed magic. I remember Paul Daniels from the 1980s and going farther back, there was a chap called David Nixon who used to perform on television in the 1970s. I loved the tricks today, but I don’t want to know how you did them! Keep me guessing!”

Violet Lloyd added, “I remember David Nixon too, I think I actually went to see him perform live years ago, might have been in Swindon way back in the 60s? But your tricks were clever. Thank you!”

Angela Wakely also enjoyed the magic, saying, “They (the tricks) were really good, some of them I could tell how you did it, but the one where you put a hanky in your hand and made it disappear, how did you do that? It was really good.”

David Rowe said “I saw how you did that! You cheated!”

And Ida Wearing remarked, “That’s lovely! It changed colour! Can we have the old colour back?”

Riaz joked, “It was great fun performing these tricks and I am currently consulting with Natasha Howard, the Home Manager, to see if I may be allowed to saw a staff member in half during my next performance.”
