At Appleton Manor care home, which offers general nursing care and residential memory care in Stockport, two Residents have been reunited after being friends at primary school. So, Wellbeing Coordinator Sarah was interested to get to know their story.
Marie Kennefic age 89 years old (nee Carroll) and Vera Harrison age 87 (nee Sadgrove) went to the same primary school; Our Lady's RC in Edgely. Marie lived in Cheadle on Argyll Road and she used to travel to school by bus. Vera used to live in Cheadle Heath near the farmers arms in Meer Brook Road.
Vera now lives with her husband Bill, who also lives at the home. Vera and Bill were married at Our Lady’s Church 61 years ago. She met Bill while working at CWS Confectionary in Reddish where she used to wrap the sweets in the factor for distribution. Bill used to make the toffees and sweets.
Both Vera and Marie left school at the age of 14. Vera says she remembers being taught by nuns called Sister Veronica and Sister Philomena. The headmistress of the school was called Miss Fisher.
Vera talked about how she was not very keen on school and Marie says she learnt more when she left school.
After leaving school Marie went to Stockport college to train to be a secretary to do short hand typing and study English, she then got a job as a secretary for a company called ‘Simon Carves Engineering Firm’.
Marie was married at St Chads 45 years ago.
Marie came to live at Appleton Manor on 19th May 2020 and Vera came to live at the home on 14th February 2021.
Sarah remarked, “It was a wonderful surprise today as two long lost friends finally meet up after such a long time. What a small world!”
