Wotton-Under-Edge care home bring the outdoors inColleagues and Residents at HC One’s Pennwood Lodge care home have been bringing the great outdoors into the home this week.

Staff and Residents have made an indoor garden area at the Wotton-Under-Edge care home.

This new space has been created for Residents to be able to sit in and engage with nature.

Residents helped to prepare old furniture and restore it, then fill it with sensory plants. Colleagues planted up a living table top with cress and cut and come again lettuce that was mobile, so that it could be taken to Residents in their rooms.

Everyone was surprised at how quick it all grew. Plants were chosen for colour, touch and smell. Staff also added things including a bird box decorated by Residents.

The home intends to carry on the theme with making a water feature and artwork for the walls. It has turned a bland area into a lovely peaceful sitting area to relax in.

The home will also be recommencing the table top garden club. Art work has been done by the Residents to complement the area including a seasonal board so they can display their work.

One Resident who previously walked with purpose around the unit are now contently sitting amongst the flowers and appear very settled. Resident Carson Emerson said “it’s such a lovely place to sit and it looks beautiful”.

Housekeeper Helen Walker, whose mother Christina is a Resident in the home said, “its lovely for all the Residents, but for my mum who always loved her garden it has given her somewhere relaxing to sit.”

Deputy manager Sarah Daly said “it is so nice to see the Residents engaging in such a beautiful area.”
