Respite care – also known as short-term care or temporary care - offers older people and their families the chance to recharge, with the comfort that around-the-clock support is available in a warm and friendly environment.
Many people opt for a short care break to see whether a care home is the right option for them longer-term, as it gives them the opportunity to trial care home life for a period of a few weeks – experiencing the facilities, food and friendships that a care home can offer.
Whether you’re looking for a change of scenery, hoping to meet new people, or simply taking some time to focus on your wellbeing, our respite stays are designed to help you feel rested, connected and supported.
From the moment you arrive, you’ll be welcomed as part of our care home community. You’ll benefit from the same personalised care, companionship and daily support as those staying with us longer term, with your hobbies, preferences and interests woven into daily life.
Who is respite care for?
People choose respite care for many reasons, including:
-
An opportunity to make new friends and enjoy activities together - enjoying new hobbies, routines and social opportunities in a safe setting
-
Time to focus on wellbeing, while a family carer takes a well-earned rest - this is often referred to as a ‘carer’s break'
-
A chance to experience life in a care home before deciding on permanent care
-
Rest and gentle support after a period of feeling unwell, such as after a short stay in hospital
No matter how long you stay with us, you’ll feel part of our community from the moment you arrive.
What are the benefits of respite care?
Many people staying with us for a short care break take the opportunity to join in with activities, enjoy freshly cooked meals with family and friends, explore our gardens, or simply enjoy quiet moments at their own pace.
Whether you’re sociable and active or prefer calm and comfort, we’ll help you make the most of your stay.
Anne’s story
Anne first joined us for a short respite stay, hoping to rebuild her confidence and reconnect with others. With encouragement from our wellbeing team, she soon rediscovered hobbies she hadn’t enjoyed in years and found new ways to stay active in daily life.
By the end of her stay, Anne had made friends, regained her independence and found a renewed sense of purpose. She chose to stay with us permanently and now plays an active role in the home as a Wellbeing Champion, welcoming new residents and helping to lead activities.
What happens at the end of a respite stay?
A respite break can help you get to know the team, the environment and the other people who live with us, so transitioning from respite to long-term care often feels like a natural next step. Many people who stay in our homes for a short care break enjoy the comfort, support and social benefits that a care home can offer, and decide to make it their home longer-term.
If you decide to stay, our kind and caring team will be with you every step of the way - making sure your transition is smooth, your choices are respected, and your care continues seamlessly.
