Care home resident revisits Loughborough Grammar School

HC-One’s Woodthorpe Lodge care home, in Loughborough, Leicestershire, is delighted to share the touching story of resident John Smalley’s memorable visit to Loughborough Grammar School, where he was a pupil in the 1930s.

On Wednesday, 21 May, 2025, Wellbeing Coordinator Claire Paisley arranged a special trip for John to the school, a place close to his heart and his family’s history, with over 500 years of heritage. Using her own connections to the school, Claire organised a warm welcome for John in the school’s historic quad, where he was greeted by the Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, and the Keeper of the Archives.

As John explored the familiar rooms, many unchanged since he left in 1942, he amazed everyone with the vivid memories he recalled. He chuckled as he shared tales of mischief, like jumping into the school’s swimming pool, and brought old photos on the walls to life with his stories.

The school presented John with a thoughtful goody bag, including historical photographs, an alumni booklet, a book about the school’s history, and a copy of his own school record, discovered by the Keeper of the Archives. Back at Woodthorpe Lodge, John couldn’t wait to show his friends the treasures he’d received.

Claire Paisley, HC-One’s Woodthorpe Lodge Wellbeing Coordinator, said:

“Watching John light up as he walked through the school and shared his memories was truly special. This visit not only brought back precious moments but also created new ones, linking generations through the school’s rich history.”

Loughborough Grammar School has also invited John to be interviewed at the care home for their archives and newsletter. For more information, call 01509 274 027, email [email protected] or visit Woodthorpe Lodge - Care Home in Loughborough, Leicestershire| HC One.
