Friendship blossoms across generations at Stoke-On-Trent care home

A remarkable bond has formed at HC-One’s Coopers Croft Care Home, in Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire, where 101-year-old resident Anna Cantor and young history enthusiast Matthew Gilbertson have forged an inspiring friendship rooted in shared stories and mutual respect.

Their connection, spanning generations, is a testament to the power of history and human connection. Anna, who grew up during Hitler’s reign on Leopoldstraße in Düsseldorf, Germany, carries a lifetime of poignant memories.

Her stories of resilience and survival through one of history’s darkest periods are both humbling and profound. Anna bravely recalls refusing to join the Hitler Youth, a decision that came with heavy consequences.

Days after her refusal, her teacher mysteriously disappeared, leaving Anna with a lingering sense of guilt. To navigate wartime Germany, Anna’s family needed ID cards proving four generations of German descent, a requirement that underscored the daily hardships they endured.

When Matthew, the brother-in-law of Coopers Croft’s Lifestyle Manager Anita Rawlingson, learned of Anna’s incredible journey, his passion for history sparked an idea. He asked to visit Anna to hear her first-hand accounts of life during World War II.

A single visit blossomed into a cherished friendship, with Matthew has returned multiple times to listen to Anna’s vivid recollections. The pair have spent hours engrossed in conversation by bringing the past to life.

Matthew Gilbertson said:

“What a wonderful lady. It is great hearing stories from the past, and Anna brought her era to life through our discussions.”

Anna Cantor, HC-One’s Coopers Croft resident, shared:

“It is always lovely to speak with Matthew. He is such a nice young man.”

Anita Rawlingson, who facilitated their connection, added:

“Matthew is my brother-in-law and seeing Anna light up when I ask if he can call in for a chat makes it worthwhile and rewarding.”
