A former jazz player at a care home in Brixworth has enjoyed the opportunity to play in front of an audience once again.
Roy Johnson, who lives at HC-One’s Pytchley Court care home, was in a swing jazz band in the late 50’s and 60’s, where he played the piano and double bass.
Roy was born in Birmingham and attended school there and took an early interest in music being part of a musical family. After leaving school he worked for the RAF and then later for British Steel, while maintaining an interest in jazz music as a hobby.
Unfortunately, due to ill health Roy has been unable to play an instrument in recent years but the visit of local music entertainer Lincoln Noel to the care home presented him with a chance to see if he could still turn out a tune.
And fellow residents were delighted as Roy and Lincoln sat together and played a couple of songs, Roy demonstrating he still had the ability to hold an audience in raptures.
Judy Barwick, Wellbeing Co-ordinator, at Pytchley Court care home, said:
“It was a pleasure to watch Roy play music again with Lincoln. All the residents enjoyed the activity and Roy certainly did.”
Speaking after his performance, Roy said:
“I enjoyed the afternoon and playing for everyone. It was just like old times!”
Susan Watson, Home Manager for Pytchley Court care home, said:
“We were delighted to facilitate this for Roy, he looked very happy playing jazz once again and everyone loved listening to him and Lincoln play together. It’s always a pleasure to give our residents a special experience and this was certainly one of those!”
