Residents at HC-One’s Charters Court Care Home in East Grinstead, West Sussex, are proving that it is never too late to learn a new skill after taking part in weekly sign language classes that are delivering remarkable results.
The initiative, led by Care Assistant Laura Patterson, has seen a group of residents enthusiastically embrace Makaton sign language, showcasing their commitment to learning while enjoying valuable social time together. The sessions have quickly become a highlight of the week, with residents practising their new skills, supporting one another and strengthening friendships along the way.
Laura, who learned Makaton as a child due to her own hearing difficulties, is thrilled to be able to pass on her skills. Makaton is a simple and effective way of communicating using signs, symbols and speech, and residents have made fantastic progress since the classes began.
Adding a special family element to the sessions, Laura’s three-year-old daughter Grace also attends and is learning to sign alongside the residents. The group love watching Grace’s progress and spending time with her, while Grace is gaining a valuable life skill, she will be able to use throughout her life. Laura and Grace now often communicate using sign language whenever possible, delighting residents and staff alike.
Senior Wellbeing Coordinator Mandy Hersey has noticed a strong sense of camaraderie forming within the group, with residents regularly practising together in their own time. Many now stay behind after sessions to enjoy a cup of tea and a chat, sharing stories and getting to know one another better.
Mandy Hersey said:
“I had the idea back in October to introduce the classes as a chance for residents to try a new hobby and to utilise Laura’s skills. It is wonderful to see how much our residents are enjoying the classes, and even more special to have family members join in. By offering diverse activities, Charters Court aims to contribute to the quality of life and overall wellbeing of our residents.”
Charters Court resident Wendy Jones, aged 87, has particularly enjoyed the challenge of learning something new.

“The sign language classes are fantastic. I have really enjoyed pursuing a new interest – it’s a fun and rewarding challenge. I’ve even started watching videos online alongside Laura’s classes so I can practise, and I’m making great progress. At Christmas we were able to sign one of the carols at our carol concert. It just shows, it is never too late to learn a new skill.”
Charters Court Care Home continues to champion meaningful activities that promote inclusion, learning and social connection, ensuring residents can continue to grow, thrive and enjoy new experiences at every stage of life.
