HC-One Dementia Coach Training recognised in national awards

HC-One’s commitment to leading dementia care has been recognised on the national stage, as the organisation’s Dementia Coach Training initiative was recognised as part of the Training and Development of the Year award at Primrose House in the National Care Awards 2025.

The award reflects the impact of HC-One’s structured approach to developing dementia expertise within homes, demonstrated through the work of Primrose House care home in Haslington, Crewe.

Over recent months, three senior colleagues at Primrose House - Deputy Home Manager Jasmin Desingco, and Nursing Assistants Chloe Taylor and David “Craig” Joinson - completed Tier 2 Dementia Coach Training. This programme equips colleagues with specialist knowledge and coaching skills, enabling them to deliver meaningful dementia education to others within their home.

Using this training, the team created and delivered a comprehensive six-part dementia learning programme for all 62 colleagues at Primrose House, spanning care, support and ancillary roles. The focus was on deepening understanding of behavioural triggers, improving communication, and strengthening person-centred practice across the whole workforce.

The results have been significant:

  • A measurable increase in colleagues’ confidence and expertise in supporting people living with dementia

  • An Outstanding rating for dementia care in the home’s most recent internal inspection

  • An 80% reduction in “as required” antipsychotic medication through improved recognition of emotional and environmental triggers

The programme has since been recognised as an example of best practice within HC-One, with the Primrose House team invited to share their learning at internal forums and contribute to a condensed version of the training for residents’ families and friends.

Home Manager Dawn Sadler said:
“This award highlights the extraordinary impact of our Dementia Coach Training. By equipping colleagues with specialist knowledge and confidence, we can support residents in ways that are truly compassionate, informed and person-centred.”

HC-One’s Dementia Coach Training continues to support homes across the organisation to strengthen understanding, improve outcomes, and embed a culture of skilled, relationship-focused dementia care.
