Averill House Care Home Launches Community Food Bank to Support Local ResidentsAverill House Care Home in Newton Heath is giving back to the community with a new, judgement-free food bank initiative.

Averill House Care Home, based in Newton Heath, Manchester, has announced the launch of a small community food bank aimed at supporting local people who may be struggling with the rising cost of living.

The food bank, run directly from the care home, will provide food parcels and essential household items to anyone in the local community who needs support. The initiative is open to all and operates as a confidential, judgement-free space, whether individuals are seeking help or looking to donate.

The idea for the food bank was developed by Clare Stott, Home Manager at Averill House Care Home, following a piece of work the home carried out to support communities in Jamaica after the devastating impact of Storm Melissa. Seeing first-hand how ongoing support can make a real difference, Clare was inspired to continue the initiative closer to home, recognising that there are always people in need within local communities.

Clare Stott, Home Manager at Averill House Care Home, commented:
“The idea for the food bank really grew from a piece of work we did to support communities in Jamaica following the devastating impact of Storm Melissa. It was incredibly moving to see how much a small, ongoing effort could help people through a difficult time.

“It got me thinking that there are always people closer to home who may be struggling too, so we wanted to keep that spirit of giving going for our local community. This food bank is about kindness, dignity and making sure no one feels alone when they need support.”

The care home is currently welcoming donations of non-perishable food and everyday essentials, including tinned food, pasta and rice, cereal, long-life milk, tea and coffee, toiletries, as well as baby wipes and nappies.

Commenting on the initiative, Arlette Naylor, Wellbeing Coordinator at Averill House Care Home said:
“Caring doesn’t stop at our front door. We’re proud to be able to support our local community in a practical way and create a safe, welcoming space for anyone who may need a helping hand. Whether you’re in need of support or able to donate, you’re very welcome at Averill House.”

Anyone who requires support is encouraged to contact the care home privately, with all requests handled sensitively and in confidence.

Averill House Care Home hopes the initiative will bring the community together and ensure that local residents feel supported during challenging times.
