Bedwas Care Home Blossoms in HC-One’s Annual Gardens in Bloom CompetitionParklands Care Home in Bedwas, Caerphilly, part of the HC-One Wales family, is proudly taking part in this year’s HC-One Gardens in Bloom competition, an annual celebration of the creativity and green-fingered spirit of care homes across the country.

This year, the Parklands team has focused on transforming their garden into a year-round sanctuary, a space for residents, visitors, and colleagues to relax, recharge, and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors no matter the season.

Marie Evans, Senior Wellbeing Coordinator at HC-One Wales’s Parklands Care Home, said:

“Our main aim has been to create a garden that’s always welcoming. Every chance of sunshine or fresh air becomes an opportunity to step outside, connect with nature, and enjoy some peace.”

Parklands Care Home’s garden is a truly collaborative effort. Care Assistant, Gail Osborne has played a pivotal role in enhancing the gazebo area, bringing her creativity and green thumb to the project.

From vibrant decorations to fragrant mint plants for residents to smell and enjoy, Gail’s contributions have made the space feel magical. The care team is currently working with residents to come up with a special name for the garden area, reflecting its growing identity as the heart of the home.

Residents have also had a hands-on role in the transformation. A group of ladies recently took part in designing colourful hanging baskets that now brighten up the back wall, an activity that brought joy, creativity, and a sense of pride.

Meanwhile, the maintenance team’s Gareth Thomas ensures that the garden is always neat, tidy, and ready to welcome guests. During the warmer months, Gareth can often be found mowing the lawns, usually under the friendly and vocal supervision of residents. His dedication is especially appreciated during Parklands’ regular gatherings with sister homes and community guests.

Earlier this July, the garden served as a tranquil and heartfelt setting for a memorial held by a resident’s family. The family specifically requested the garden, saying it was a beautiful, peaceful space where they felt grateful to gather with loved ones.

Marie Evans added:

“Our garden has become more than just a space; it’s a symbol of the community spirit we cherish here at Parklands. Whether it's welcoming local councillors, hosting summer socials, or simply enjoying a chat in the sun, it brings us all together.”

Summer is a wonderful time to join a care home like Parklands. With warm weather, vibrant outdoor spaces, and a host of seasonal events, it’s the perfect time for new residents to settle into a welcoming and active community.
