Residents at The Denby Care Home in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, were delighted to welcome visitors from Skelmanthorpe Library and the Woven in Kirklees Project recently, as they delivered the much-anticipated Community Quilt.
The spectacular quilt, created from dozens of individual squares crafted by local clubs, businesses and members of the community, represents a true celebration of creativity and collaboration across Kirklees. Among the many contributions are five beautifully designed squares produced last year by The Denby Art Club – making the display particularly special for residents and staff alike.
The home now has the privilege of showcasing the Community Quilt for just under a month. It has taken pride of place in the lobby beside the grand piano, where residents, relatives and members of the public are warmly invited to come and admire the craftsmanship and detail of this remarkable piece.
Residents were in awe as the quilt was unveiled, praising the skill and dedication behind each square. The display has also sparked thoughtful conversations about how needlework and textile crafts can continue to be enjoyed in later life, particularly as holding fine needles for long periods and managing deteriorating eyesight can present new challenges.
Penny Duncan, Wellbeing Coordinator at The Denby Care Home, said:
“Our residents love joining in community events and to see some of their work on display is fulfilling.”
Hannah Carrington, General Site Manager at The Denby Care Home, added:
“We are proud to have the community blanket on display in the home for the next few weeks and members of the public are welcome to come and see it.”
The Community Quilt stands as a symbol of shared creativity, connection and inclusion – values that remain at the heart of life at The Denby Care Home.
