Residents at Douglas View Care Home in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, were treated to a truly magical afternoon recently, as local children joined them for a special intergenerational story time with newly published author Lauren Kyle.
Lauren, a regular entertainer at Douglas View, has just released her debut children’s book, Orla The Fairy: Twist of Fate. To celebrate the launch, she visited the home dressed as a fairy, complete with fairy garden decorations and twinkling fairy lights, creating an enchanting atmosphere for residents and children alike.
The local nursery joined the session, and Lauren read the story with help from the residents, encouraging them to interact with the children and bring the book to life. The children’s delighted reactions and laughter filled the room, much to the joy of the residents.
Residents also shared their thoughts on the story. Resident Jean Lovatt commented:
“The book is beautiful, the colours are lovely, and it was a great story.”
Resident Rina Gemmell sparked further excitement by asking the children whether they believed in fairies at the bottom of their gardens. The children eagerly told her about their own fairy garden at nursery, leading to lots of animated conversation and smiles.
Charlene Curtis, Douglas View Care Home Manager said:
“It was wonderful seeing the children’s faces light up as the story unfolded. Our residents were so happy watching them giggle and join in, it really brought everyone together.
“This has been a fantastic experience for our residents and the nursery children. Hearing the story first-hand from the author and watching the interaction between our residents and the little ones has been amazing. These moments of connection are so special, and everyone really had a wonderful time.”
The event concluded with snacks and juice, as residents and children continued chatting about fairies, stories, and their favourite parts of the book.
