An 86-year-old resident at HC-One’s Charters Court Care Home in East Grinstead, West Sussex, has shared her inspiring story of recovery and renewed independence after arriving at the home for end-of-life care earlier this year.
When Ann Matthews moved into Charters Court in February, she had spent four months in hospital following a serious illness that left her unable to walk or care for herself. Doctors told her there was nothing more they could do.
Just eight months later, Ann is thriving, walking with the aid of a frame, enjoying outings with friends, and taking part in a busy social calendar at the home.
Ann said:
“When I arrived at Charters Court, I was placed on end-of-life care, but the staff worked tirelessly to help me regain my independence. The care, kindness and encouragement I’ve received have changed my life completely. I can now walk freely, go out with friends, and enjoy so many wonderful activities. I feel like I’ve been given a new lease of life.”
Charters Court Care Home, which provides residential, nursing and residential dementia care, offers residents a warm, luxurious environment that Ann describes as “just like a five-star hotel.” The home’s talented kitchen team serves freshly prepared meals daily, featuring a varied menu of home-cooked dishes from around the world, and even a glass of wine for those who fancy it.
Residents also benefit from a vibrant activities programme that includes everything from Zumba and art classes to flower arranging and choir practice. There are regular outings to the coast, theatre trips, local garden centres and even visits to the local pub, a firm favourite among residents. A range of entertainers also visit the home, including musicians, magicians, and a local charity that offers Trishaw rides around the grounds.
Ann has embraced the opportunities available and recently joined the home’s choir and begun learning sign language.
“It’s never too late to learn something new,” she said. “I have made so many friends and enjoyed so many wonderful experiences. I cannot thank the staff at Charters Court enough. I came here for end-of-life care, but instead, I’ve found a new beginning.”
Charters Court Home Manager Julie Harper said:
“We are all so proud of Ann and how far she has come. Her determination and positivity are truly inspiring, and it’s wonderful to see her enjoying life again. At Charters Court, we’re passionate about helping every resident live their best possible life, whatever their circumstances.”
