A resident at Leighton Court Care Home in Wallasey, Wirral, Merseyside, enjoyed a special day out to New Brighton recently, thanks to a thoughtful idea from the home’s wellbeing team.
Kenny Walker, whose favourite food has always been fish and chips, was treated to a day centred around his favourite things, organised by Wellbeing Coordinator Sophie Teasdale.
The trip began with a minibus adventure to the town’s public boating lake, where members of the New Brighton Model Boat Club were sailing their impressive collection of model boats.
Residents were warmly welcomed by club members, who took the time to chat and answer questions about their boats. One member even kindly let another resident try controlling a model boat using his remote controller, much to everyone’s delight.
There were dozens of different boats to admire, and as residents enjoyed tea from a flask in the spring sunshine, several members sailed their boats closer to the group so they could get a better look.
After the boating lake visit, the group headed to local favourite Mediterranean Sea Fish Bar to enjoy the classic seaside treat of fish and chips.
Kenny was thrilled with the meal, describing it as the best fish and chips he has ever had. Staff at the chippy were praised for being incredibly helpful and welcoming to the group.
No visit to New Brighton would be complete without a stop at the well-known family bakery Dodgshons Bakery. The much-loved local business has been serving the community since 1975 and is a staple for many Wirral residents.
Kenny chose a slice of their famous lemon cake, which the group enjoyed later back at the care home with a cup of tea.
Sophie Teasdale, Wellbeing Coordinator at Leighton Court Care Home, said:
“We always try to create meaningful experiences for our residents, especially when we know something they truly love. Kenny adores fish and chips, so we decided to build a whole day around it. Seeing everyone chatting with the model boat club members, enjoying the sunshine and finishing the day with cake made it really special.”
Resident Kenny Walker added:
“You are my hero. This has been wonderful.”
The day was filled with laughter, friendly conversations and plenty of delicious treats, proving that sometimes the simplest pleasures make the most memorable moments.
