At Hambleton Grange Care Home in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, making wishes come true for residents is always a joy and recently, one special resident’s love of baking was celebrated in style.
Jill Newsom, a long-time baker, had been missing the opportunity to get hands-on in the kitchen. When she expressed interest in seeing how the care home’s delicious cakes and baked goods were made, the team jumped at the chance to make her wish a reality.
With the help of Kitchen Assistant, Michaela Cullen, Jill was soon weighing, mixing, and adding her own flair. Together, they created a coffee cake specially requested for another resident’s birthday. Jill then moved on to decorating, producing a beautiful finished cake that delighted everyone.
Jill’s baking didn’t stop there. She also replenished the care home’s popular Friday flapjacks in reception and prepared scones filled with jam and cream for afternoon snacks across the home.
Michaela Cullen said,
“It was a real pleasure to have Jill in the kitchen, she absolutely loved it.”
Elaine Snowden, Lifestyle Manager, added,
“It’s wonderful to fulfil residents’ wishes. Such a simple wish, yet it brought back so many happy memories, and we loved seeing all the messages from Jill’s family sharing their memories of her baking.”
Family members of Jill were equally delighted. Rachel Cornforth, Jill’s daughter, said, “This is exactly how we think of Mum.” Debbie Bell, also a daughter, commented, “That’s brilliant – it’s so good to see Mum baking again. Thank you, Michaela and Hambleton Grange.” Steve Newsom, Jill’s son, remembered, “Chocolate chip cookies were a firm favourite in our family along with flapjacks and Victoria sponge.” Elaine Weir, Jill’s granddaughter, said, “Good to see her baking again – we all loved her biscuits and cakes, as well as baking with her growing up. The cake tins were never empty!”
