Haslington care home’s green fingered residents reap delicious rewards

The green-fingered residents at HC-One’s Primrose House Care Home, in Haslington, near Crewe, are reaping the rewards of their gardening passion, as their homegrown produce takes centre stage in delicious dishes.

HC-One’s Primrose House Care Home, which provides nursing and residential dementia care, has its own greenhouse and residents are encouraged to participate in cultivating fruit and vegetables for use by the catering team.

Primrose House’s greenhouse is managed by housekeeper Kristina Slibinskiene, who is a keen horticulturalist, loves to help the residents with their own plants. From crisp salad greens to juicy fruits, the homegrown ingredients are subsequently transformed by the catering team into mouthwatering sandwiches and cakes.

Residents have been busy planting and watering vibrant hanging baskets to create a welcoming, summery atmosphere that brightens the home for visitors and families. Excitement is building for the care home’s Summer Fair on Saturday, June 21, where residents will proudly showcase their homegrown treasures at their very own plant stall.

Dawn Sadler, HC-One’s Primrose House Care Home Manager, said:

"We feel it is important to get our residents out into the garden and enjoying the weather, helping ensure they get plenty of exercise and fresh air. Many of our residents enjoyed their own gardens at home, and we want them to continue their passion for gardening.

“It’s a great activity that they can all take part in, and it’s even better when they can see – and taste – the results of their hard work.”
