A resident at HC-One’s Hepworth House Care Home in Stanley, Wakefield, has been spreading comfort and joy to new families at Pinderfields Hospital labour ward through a heart-warming community knitting project.
Norma Lazenby, 92 years old, a much-loved resident at Hepworth House, alongside her fellow residents, have been busy knitting handmade teddy bears, cardigans and hats for newborn babies as well as collecting donated knitted items. A passionate knitter for many years, Norma uses her craft as a way to relax, express her creativity and give back to others. Over recent months, her efforts have been supported by fellow residents, care home colleagues and members of the local community, helping the project to grow.
As part of the initiative, Norma and a colleague from Hepworth House recently visited Pinderfields Hospital labour ward to personally deliver the knitted items to the unit. The handmade gifts will be shared with new mothers, offering warmth, comfort and a personal touch during a very special time. Norma greatly enjoyed presenting her creations and meeting those who will benefit from her work, returning to the care home feeling inspired and eager to begin knitting even more items.
The project continues to bring people together through weekly coffee and cake mornings held every Tuesday from 10:30am until 12:00pm at Hepworth House Care Home. Residents and community members meet to knit, chat and support the cause, with donations of knitted teddy bears, cardigans and hats also welcomed from those unable to attend in person.
Norma Lazenby, a resident at HC-One’s Hepworth House Care Home, said:
“Knitting has always been something I absolutely love. Knowing that my creations will be shared with new families at such a special time makes me so happy. It’s wonderful to think that something I made can bring a smile to someone else.”
The team at Hepworth House are proud to support residents like Norma in using their skills and passions to make a positive difference beyond the care home.
Debbie Manley, Home Manager at Hepworth House, said:
“Norma’s kindness and creativity are truly inspiring. This project not only brings comfort to families at Pinderfields Hospital but also strengthens the connections between our residents and the wider community. It’s a perfect example of the sense of purpose and togetherness we encourage at Hepworth House.”
Hepworth House Care Home hopes the initiative will continue to grow, strengthening community bonds while providing comfort and care to families at the hospital during life’s most precious moments.
