Hounslow care home honours retired Merchant Navy and Royal Horse Artillery resident on Armed Forces

In celebration of Armed Forces Day (28th June), HC-One’s Ashgrove Care Home in Hounslow, Essex, is proud to honour resident Edward McLaren, aged 82, whose life reflects exceptional courage, commitment, and patriotism.

Edward began his service for the nation at 17 years old, joining the Merchant Navy where he served for 18 months. His dedication to duty then led him to enlist in the Royal Horse Artillery in 1962.

From his initial posting in Edinburgh to a significant mission in Kenya during a period of conflict, Edward demonstrated bravery in challenging conditions, operating cannons in the field under immense pressure. His military journey later took him to Germany, where he served for four years, completing a remarkable decade of service by 1972.

Among his most treasured memories is the immense honour of meeting Her Majesty the Queen and participating in the prestigious horse parade at both Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle. Standing steadfast beside him throughout this extraordinary journey has been his beloved wife, Lesley McLaren.

Reflecting on their 49 years of marriage, Lesley McLaren, wife of Edward McLaren, shared:

“It was the best decision of my life to spend it with such a brave and honourable man.”

Lourdes Pascua, Home Manager at HC-One’s Ashgrove Care Home, said:

“Edward’s story is one of strength, honour and pride. We are truly privileged to care for him here at Ashgrove and to be able to celebrate his remarkable contributions to our country on Armed Forces Day.

“Edward is a source of great inspiration to everyone at Ashgrove, and his story stands as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices and achievements of our Armed Forces veterans.’’
