Kings Court Care Home Residents Take a Trip Back in Time at Newark Air MuseumResidents from HC-One’s Kings Court Care Home in Newark recently enjoyed a memorable day out exploring the Newark Air Museum, one of the UK’s largest volunteer-managed aviation museums.

Residents Brian Patton, Jim Boot, Bill Kennett, Walter South and Raymond Smith spent the day admiring the museum’s impressive collection of over 80 aircrafts. The visit held particular significance for resident Brian Patton, a well-respected legacy volunteer at the museum, who dedicated nearly 20 years of his life volunteering there after the loss of his wife Elizabeth.

Brian was warmly welcomed by staff who recognised his contribution to the museum and was given free entry as a mark of respect. Rather than being guided by a staff member, Brian proudly took the lead, showing his fellow residents and Kings Court team members around the aircrafts and engine rooms, sharing his knowledge and personal memories along the way.

The visit was emotional at times, as Brian reflected on his personal connection with the museum, including the aircraft in which his son tragically lost his life while serving in the RAF. Brian was also delighted to discover that he and fellow resident Bill Kennett had both served in the RAF at the same time, just two months apart, sparking an animated exchange of shared experiences.

Brian, who moved into Kings Court in April this year, has even donated some of his rare aviation memorabilia to the museum’s collection, ensuring that his passion continues to inspire future visitors.

Speaking about the trip, Brian said:

“Oh the trip took me back in time, not only to my time volunteering at the museum, but also to the time I spent in the RAF. It was so kind of Kings Court to organise this trip for us; they know how much the museum means to me and the amount of happy memories I have there. I’m now an honorary member of the museum and it was lovely to go back and see the planes whilst reminiscing with my new friends.”

Catherine Skorin, Front of House Manager at Kings Court Care Home, added:

“It was great to be able to give Brian and the other gentlemen the opportunity to visit the air museum. It’s such an iconic museum within Newark and they all had a wonderful time seeing the planes and sharing stories. Days like this are so important, not just for sparking memories, but also for building new ones together.

“This trip marked one of the last of our summer outings, and as we look ahead to the autumn months, we’re excited to continue keeping our residents engaged with activities such as Harvest Festival celebrations, cosy indoor events, and seasonal activities that make the most of this special time of year.”

Kings Court Care Home is just one of over 280 kind and cosy HC-One homes across the UK. New residents can experience 4 weeks for the price of 3 when they join before 30 November 2025.
