Mitcham care home commemorates D-Day with wartime-inspired cooking blub

In a warm and spirited tribute to D-Day, residents at HC-One’s Fieldway Care Home in Mitcham, Surrey, rolled up their sleeves and took a trip down memory lane by baking a traditional wartime treat, carrot scones.

Six enthusiastic residents joined the special D-Day Cooking Club session, where they were supported by Senior Wellbeing Coordinator Suzi Housego, Wellbeing Coordinator Paula Thomas, and dedicated care colleagues. With ingredients pre-measured for ease, residents poured, mixed, rubbed butter into flour, and kneaded dough with plenty of hands-on fun and laughter.

Carer at HC-One’s Fieldway Care Home, Kalpana Prajapati said:

“There was a real sense of camaraderie and joy. It was lovely to come together and take part in a meaningful activity. Residents and colleagues really worked as a team, laughing and joking the whole way through.

“At Fieldway Care Home, meaningful engagement, shared experiences, and plenty of fun remain at the heart of resident wellbeing and this D-Day celebration was no exception.”

With playful comparisons to Mary Berry and flour-dusted hands, the group created delicious carrot scones, which were later enjoyed with a cup of tea and the nostalgic sounds of wartime classics – including beloved favourites by Vera Lynn.

The success of the session has already sparked interest in future gatherings. Residents were so delighted with the experience that they’ve requested the Cooking Club become a regular monthly activity, with pizza-making on the menu for July.
