Residents at HC-One’s Cedar House Care Home in Harefield, Middlesex, were delighted to welcome two very unusual visitors recently, Pebbles and Tiny, a pair of two-year-old African miniature tortoises.
The tortoises belong to the grandchildren of Cedar House’s Wellbeing Coordinator, Samantha Dreelan, who arranged the visit as part of the home’s regular activities programme. The afternoon created a real buzz around the home, with residents eager to meet their new reptilian friends.
Residents were fascinated to learn all about Pebbles and Tiny, commenting on how much faster they moved than expected and how sharp their little claws were. Many enjoyed holding them gently, taking photographs, and sharing laughter as the tortoises wriggled in their hands. The visit also sparked plenty of conversation, with residents reminiscing about pets they had owned throughout their lives, from cats and dogs to more unusual animals.
Samantha Dreelan, Wellbeing Coordinator at HC-One’s Cedar House Care Home said:
“It was such a joy to bring Pebbles and Tiny into Cedar House. The residents were so engaged and curious, asking lots of questions about how the tortoises are cared for and what they like to eat. It was wonderful to see the smiles on their faces, the visit really brightened everyone’s day.”
Animal visits are a much-loved feature of life at Cedar House, offering residents companionship, comfort, and opportunities for sensory stimulation. Spending time with animals has been shown to reduce stress, encourage social interaction, and support overall wellbeing, something Cedar House is proud to provide through its varied activity programme.
