Residents from Hambleton Grange Care Home in Thirsk, North Yorkshire, enjoyed a fun and active afternoon after taking a trip to Northallerton Bowls Club to try their hand at carpet bowls for the very first time.
When residents were given the opportunity to have a go at the sport, they jumped at the chance. After a short journey on the home’s minibus, everyone arrived ready to give it a go and enjoy the friendly competition.
The group received a warm welcome from the club’s President, Bernard Eland, and his wife Joan Eland, who shared helpful tips and guidance on how to play. Residents quickly learned that the bowls have a bias and that there is a real art to rolling them in just the right way.
Despite being complete novices, residents embraced the challenge and soon got the hang of the game, enjoying plenty of laughter along the way.
After working up an appetite on the green, the group was treated to a delicious Black Forest gateau specially baked by Joan, served with a welcome hot drink before the residents headed back to Hambleton Grange in time for tea.
Elaine Snowden, Lifestyle Manager at Hambleton Grange, said: “It was a great afternoon enjoyed by all – staff and minibus driver Dave included. It was fantastic to see the residents, who were complete novices, take up the challenge and have such a wonderful time.”
Resident Sheila Thornton added: “That has been my best trip out to date.”
Jill Newsom also shared her enthusiasm, saying: “I have never played before and I really enjoyed it.”
The outing provided residents with a new experience, gentle exercise and an opportunity to socialise – all while enjoying the welcoming hospitality of the local bowls club.
