HC-One’s Colton Lodges Care Home in Colton, Leeds, West Yorkshire, is celebrating a heartwarming new partnership with The Together Project after being nominated to host a full year of Songs & Smiles sessions, completely free for local parents, guardians, and their little ones.
The nomination came from a HARIBO colleague whose grandmother is a cherished resident at Colton Lodges. Their gesture has helped launch an uplifting weekly event that is already making a remarkable difference to residents and families alike.
Songs & Smiles is an intergenerational music group held every Wednesday morning inside the home. Led by group facilitator Annie Bennett, each session brings residents, babies, toddlers, and guardians together through singing, play, and shared moments. With a blend of nursery rhymes and music from across the decades, no two weeks are the same.
Residents and families enjoy singing, dancing, and after the music has stopped, time for conversation, cuddles, play, and refreshments. These meaningful interactions help reduce loneliness, spark memories, and build genuine friendships across generations.
Charlotte Brown, Lead Wellbeing Coordinator at Colton Lodges, said:
“It’s so lovely to see great relationships built, and residents talking about the baby group for days afterwards. It’s obvious how much of a positive impact these sessions have on our residents’ lives, the memories they are creating while reminiscing on their own are truly special.”
Wellbeing Coordinator Carol Walker added:
“I love this group. It’s amazing how much enjoyment the residents get out of it, it’s so rewarding to see.”
Residents themselves eagerly anticipate the weekly sessions.
Peter Prydden often asks, “Is it baby group today?” and another resident, Patricia Howie, shared: “Oh wow, this is wonderful, it’s made my day.”
