Wallasey care home colleague walks 30 miles to support families living with dementiaSophie Teasdale, Wellbeing Coordinator at HC-One’s Leighton Court Care Home, is taking on a meaningful challenge of walking 30 miles throughout September to raise funds for families affected by dementia.

Sophie is stepping out in support of Dementia UK, the dementia specialist nursing charity that provides vital advice, support and understanding through its free Helpline and specialist Admiral Nurses, who offer families both practical solutions and emotional guidance when they need it most.

Sophie chose the charity as it is one that means a great deal to the people around her, and she wanted to take on something that would make a positive difference. Sophie’s personal challenge quickly grew into a community effort, with residents at Leighton Court joining her on the journey.

Together, they have walked around the local community, enjoyed strolls through the surrounding area, and even completed laps of the garden when the weather wasn’t on their side. Residents have been delighted to take part, as Alex Murphy was the first to join Sophie, with plenty of smiles and positivity along the way.

Kath Murray, Bob Stirling, and Kath Parry have also taken part, as the team has already covered more than 18 miles and raised £245, with just days left to go. Dementia UK has been providing encouragement throughout, cheering Sophie and the residents on as they make strides for families living with dementia.

Sophie Teasdale, HC-One’s Leighton Court Wellbeing Coordinator, said:
“I wanted to do something different, include our residents, and support a good cause – so a sponsored walk for Dementia UK was perfect. We have enjoyed walking and talking so much, it has been wonderful for our mental health as well.”

Kath Murray, HC-One’s Leighton Court resident, shared:
“I loved it. I loved being a part of something to help others.”

Joanna Sullivan, Deputy Director of Fundraising at Dementia UK, said:
“We are so grateful to Sophie for taking on this challenge for Dementia UK. One in two of us will be affected by dementia in our lifetime – either by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves, or both.

“It can be exhausting and overwhelming, not only for the person with dementia, but also for the people caring for them, and their wider family and friends.

“Thanks to the hard work of our amazing fundraisers like Sophie, more families than ever will be able to access the life-changing support offered by our Admiral Nurses.”

Sophie’s fundraising page is open for donations, and every contribution – big or small – will make a difference. To donate, please visit Sophie’s fundraiser page at Dementia UK here.
