Averill House Care Home on Averill Street in Newton Heath, Manchester, is inviting the local community to help combat loneliness in later life through an exciting new initiative: Pen Pals & Adopt a Grandparent.
Loneliness among older adults is a real challenge but so is the power of connection. Averill House is calling on local schools, nurseries, families, community groups, and businesses to get involved by writing letters, sending drawings, sharing stories, or even forming lasting friendships with residents.
Arlette Naylor, Activities Coordinator said:
“Our residents light up when they receive post. The smile, the memories shared, the spark in their eyes, it’s magical. One letter really can change someone’s week.”
The care home has started to reach out to local partners including Oasis Academy Broadoak; St Wilfrid’s C of E Primary School; St Mary’s CofE Primary School, Newton Heath; The Manchester College; Newton Heath Community Group and Manchester City Council.
Teachers, parents, business owners, and community leaders are encouraged to get involved and help ensure that every resident at Averill House has someone writing to them.
