The power of intergenerational connections in care homes

At HC-One, we believe in the power of connection — not just between those living and working in our care homes , but across all generations within our communities. Intergenerational relationships bring joy, purpose and new perspectives to life in our care homes.

The benefits of intergenerational connections

Whether it’s a shared hobby, a music session or simply a good chat, these interactions can help reduce loneliness for older people living in a care home, while improving wellbeing and sparking meaningful memories for everyone involved.

Another key benefit of intergenerational activities in care homes is maintaining a strong connection with the community outside of the home. Such activities can also help give older people a renewed sense of purpose, by helping children and younger people to complete tasks such as arts and crafts or games.

For younger people, they offer a unique opportunity to learn, grow and gain insight from those with a lifetime of experience.

Moments of connection in HC-One care homes

Across our family of care homes, we see the magic that happens when generations come together.

At Coopers Croft care home in Stoke-on-Trent, a green-fingered friendship has blossomed between resident John and Ethan, a student from Regent College, as they team up to bring colour to the garden and joy to each other’s week.

Residents at Fleming Court care home in Jesmond enjoyed a musical afternoon with students from Newcastle University’s music school, singing along to classics handpicked by residents.

At Falstone Court care home in Sunderland, Health and Social Care students from Sunderland College joined residents for a special afternoon of menu tasting, reminiscing, homemade Easter treats and TikTok talk – a heartwarming exchange of stories and smiles.

Over at Cold Springs Park care home in Penrith, weekly visits from Ullswater Community College students have become a Friday highlight, giving residents something to look forward to and creating lasting bonds.

These moments are more than just visits — they’re connections that build understanding, boost confidence and brighten lives. We’re proud to support opportunities that help all generations learn, laugh and thrive together.
