When Ian talks about his wife Jacqui, who lives at Falstone Manor care home in Sunderland, one word shines through – reassurance. For Ian, knowing Jacqui is safe, happy, and cared for with kindness means he can focus on enjoying precious quality time with her.
When Jacqui was diagnosed with vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, Ian reached a point where he knew he had done everything he could at home. He wanted Jacqui to continue living with a good quality of life, while also ensuring they could still share meaningful time together. Choosing Falstone Manor gave him the reassurance that Jacqui would receive the dementia care she deserved, while he could focus on being her husband.
Ian explained: “I’ve got peace of mind because I know I can rely on the team here. Once we got into a routine, Jacqui knew where we were going and what to expect – and she really enjoys it. That means the world to me.”
Now, Jacqui enjoys regular outings with Ian, from walks along the seafront to visits to the park and their favourite coffee shop. She even took part in a Memory Walk for Alzheimer’s Society, showing her love of being outdoors and surrounded by life.
For Ian, these shared moments are priceless: “She seems happy to see me, but she’s also happy to come back here for a meal after our walks. That tells me a lot.”
Although dementia brings challenges, Ian feels reassured knowing that the kind dementia care team at Falstone Manor is ready to adapt as Jacqui’s condition changes. Above all, he treasures the time they spend together, supported by a team who truly care.
