This October, HC-One is recognising Black History Month 2025, a time to celebrate and reflect on the history, achievements and contributions of people of African and Caribbean heritage across the UK.
Observed every October, Black History Month is an opportunity to share stories, promote understanding and celebrate the cultural richness that shapes our communities. It also encourages conversations about equality, inclusion and how we can all contribute to positive change.
As our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Lead, Tasnem Bhopalwala, explains:
“Black History Month is a time to educate, share experiences and recognise the achievements and influence of Black communities, while continuing important conversations around equality and inclusion.”
The UK’s first Black History Month took place in 1987, initiated by Akyaaba Addai-Sebo to mark the 150th anniversary of Caribbean emancipation and to promote understanding of Black history as part of British history.
Throughout October, our family of care homes are coming together to honour this month in their own ways, through events, storytelling, music and cultural activities that bring people together in kindness and respect.
We’re encouraging people living and working in our homes to share their experiences of how their home is United in Kindness. These stories will be celebrated internally to highlight the strength and diversity within our HC-One community.
By reflecting on the past and celebrating the present, we continue to grow as a kind, inclusive and connected organisation, one that values every story and every individual.
