Five HC-One Colleagues from care homes across the North West of England have been shortlisted as finalists by the judging panel at the Great British Care Awards 2022, Regional Awards for the North West region.
The awards recognise those individuals who go above and beyond to provide the best quality of life, care and environment for Residents as well as showing compassion, kindness and guidance to Relatives and their Colleagues.
HC-One’s finalists for the Great British Care Awards 2022, Regional Awards for the North West region are:
• Donna Spencer, Head Chef at Averill House Care Home, finalist in The Care Home Cook/Chef Award Category
Donna ensures she caters for all Residents’ dietary needs, whether this is by working on meals which accommodate different levels of modified textures and diets to allergy intolerances. Whilst catering for special diets, she is also constantly looking for ways to make food and the dining experience as exciting as possible for Residents.
Donna understands the importance of nutritional needs of older people and creates meals that offer the correct calorific and nutritional content for Residents, as she considers meals to be a fundamental part of every Resident’s care plan at the home.
• Jodie Yates, Wellbeing Coordinator at Averill House Care Home, finalist in The Care Home Activity Organiser Award Category
Jodie recognises that every Resident is different and has their own personal activity provisions planned and catered for around their own needs. Jodie does this for 48 Residents in total by having individual sessions with them. Jodie goes above and beyond to stimulate Residents’ mind, body and soul. Jodie finds out Residents’ likes, dislikes, preferences, hobbies and pastimes through spending quality one on one time with them.
Jodie is continually reviewing and updating the activities she provides to Residents. Activities are kept up to date, ensuring that activities differ and offer variety. Jodie listens to the wants and requests made by the Residents and does everything to make these come true.
• Janice Hemmings, Home Administrator at Kings Park Care Home, finalist in The Ancillary Worker Award Category
Janice has worked at Kings Park for 30 years. Janice pays a crucial part in our team and in HC-One’s success. Her dedication, drive, determination, and innovation are outstanding every single day. Janice will always provide a listening ear and a helping hand; she makes Relatives and Colleagues feel at ease by taking time out of her busy day to pay attention to their every need.
Janice has a kind caring side, she is not just an administrator, she is committed to every part of Kings Park. Janice always makes people visiting the home feel welcome with a warm smile, and makes people laugh, boosting morale. Janice is selfless, generous, fair, passionate, supportive and a great mentor.
• Rebecca Whitehead, Head of Care at Summerhill Care Home, finalist in The Social Care Covid Hero Award Category
Rebecca leads by example, taking on extra responsibilities and supports others through the toughest of times, all the traits of a truly special leader. Rebecca has proactively developed and mentored inexperienced team members to get the absolute best out of them. Rebecca excels in communicating effectively to everyone. Rebecca has shown outstanding leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Her current role as Head of Care involves supporting the Home Manager with quality assurance through carrying out quality audits within the home and overseeing KCIs.
• Lesley Pearson Moore, Wellbeing Coordinator at Pendleton Court Care Home, finalist in The Care Home Activity Organiser Award Category
Lesley brings meaningful and positive changes to the wellbeing of Residents since joining the care home over eight years ago. Her passion for wellbeing and quality of life has been shown in many ways, ranging from constantly looking for new ways to link up and build connections with the local community to taking part in every project offered to enrich the lives of people living at Pendleton Court.
A recent example includes supporting a new Resident that had moved into the home to rediscover his passion for guitars and music by organising guitar lessons and playing music together following not playing guitar for many years.

The Great British Care Awards consist of 23 awards, which cover a wide range of areas of the social care sector. The awards are a series of regional events throughout the UK and are a celebration of distinction across the care sector. The awards pay tribute to those who have demonstrated outstanding excellence within their area of work. The award ceremony of the Great British Care Awards 2022, Regional Awards for the North West region takes place at the Kimpton Clocktower Hotel in Manchester on Saturday 12th November 2022 when the winners will be announced. Successful winners of the North West regional awards will progress to the national finals of the Great British Care Awards 2023 taking place on Friday 17th March 2023 at the ICC in Birmingham.
