HC-One shortlisted for an outstanding four awards at the Scottish Care Home Awards 2021HC-One Colleagues and care homes across Scotland have been shortlisted as finalists by the judging panel at the Scottish Care Home Awards 2021.

The achievement of these four finalists is recognition of their hard work and kind care shown to Residents, Relatives and Colleagues as well as the dedication and passion they show every day to ensure the people they support receive the best quality care. 

HC-One’s finalists for the Scottish Care Home Awards 2021 are:

• Simon Riggs, Head Chef at Chapel Level Care Home, finalist in the Emerging Talent Award Category.

Simon who is new to the sector, has grown in his role as Head Chef at Chapel Level to become a shining example of the care home workforce. In his role as Head Chef, he has helped achieve something beyond his normal role requirements and has stepped outside of his comfort zone to demonstrate improvements and make a difference in his role at the home. Simon has shown willingness to learn and improve, as well as being a positive example to Colleagues within the home. 

He has fully implemented HC-One menus and arranged taster sessions for Residents to clarify likes and dislikes, taking into consideration their personal choices and preferences to deliver a person-centred service. Simon also began home baking for the daily tea trolley service, much to the delight of Residents. 

• Balcarres Care Home, finalist in the Care Home Service of the Year Award Category.

Balcarres Care Home provides an outstanding service and are at the forefront of providing excellent care to Residents in Scotland. Balcarres continually provide examples and evidence of sustained excellent practice, innovation and positive risk taking.  

In the home’s external inspection report by Care Inspectorate Scotland, following the last inspection on 19th November 2019, the home was rated as ‘Very Good’ (5) in ‘How well is our care and support planned?’ and ‘How well do we support people’s wellbeing?’ 

In addition, Balcarres also received an ‘Outstanding’ in HC-One’s internal inspection and assessment in June 2021 which is based on the Care Inspectorate’s Quality Inspection Framework evaluations. 

Balcarres Care Home has a near perfect 10/10 review score on carehome.co.uk (the UK’s leading care home directory) of 9.9 based on 61 reviews from service users (as of 8th September 2021). This has resulted in Balcarres celebrating the triumph and success of being named as a winner in the prestigious Top 20 Carehome.co.uk Awards in Scotland 2021. 

• Caledonian Korsakoff Unit - Hillside View Care Home, finalist in the Specialist Service/Unit of the Year Award Category.

The Caledonian Korsakoff Unit at Hillside View Care Home has been shortlisted as a finalist in this award category, as they have demonstrated that they provide the specific skills needed to manage and deliver services sensitive to the needs of older people with dementia, alongside other specialist conditions and client groups. 

Colleagues have demonstrated how they have made a difference to individuals through the specialist care services they provide. Colleagues have shown a passion for improving care and the lives of people with specialist needs, and demonstrate excellence and innovation in developing their care provision at Hillside View Care Home. 

• Caitriona Morrison, Blar Buidhe Care Home, finalist in the Carer of the Year Award Category.

Caitriona Morrison has been recognised for her role as a Nursing Assistant at Blar Buidhe for providing a consistent high-quality standard of care for Residents living at the home, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Caitriona understands and demonstrates treating each person as an individual by delivering a personalised service. She helps people to be more independent wherever possible. She is also aware of her own personal development and looks for opportunities to absorb knowledge, attend training sessions and advance her skills. Caitriona uses her initiative and involves Residents and their Relatives/Carers in the development of their loved one’s care.

The Scottish Care Home Awards 2021 consist of 13 different award categories, which cover a wide range of areas of the social care sector. The Scottish Care Home Awards 2021 celebrate the very best people working in the care sector and those who go above and beyond to provide consistent exceptional care, as well as celebrating the achievements of Residents. The Scottish Care Home Awards ceremony will be hosted by Michelle McManus and Dr Donald Macaskill, and take place on Friday 1st April 2022 at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow when the winners will be announced.
