A Blooming Success at River Court Care HomeRiver Court Care Home, located in Watford, Hertfordshire, is celebrating the flourishing results of a wonderful gardening project carried out by its residents and Wellbeing Team. Last summer, the team came together to plant daffodil bulbs and citrus mint herbs, creating a vibrant and fragrant addition to the home’s gardens.

Gardening has always been a favourite pastime for residents, and the flower planting was a true group effort. Everyone was excited to see the bulbs grow and wondered how beautifully the flowers would bloom over time.

With the arrival of sunny March days, the Wellbeing Team and residents decided it was the perfect time to check on their plants’ progress. They were delighted to find the daffodils in full bloom and the citrus mint herbs thriving, filling the air with their refreshing scent.

A special highlight of the day was welcoming fairly new resident Dermot Kelly from the Gade community for his very first full tour of the garden since arriving at River Court in November. Accompanied by his lovely daughter, who provided extra warmth and reassurance, Dermot was able to explore the scale and beauty of the grounds during the early spring season.

Holding a keen interest in gardens and nature, and having previously worked in gardening before retirement, Dermot showed wonderful enthusiasm throughout the visit. His mood was visibly uplifted as he carefully navigated the pathways, observing the blooming daffodils, fragrant citrus mint herbs and delicate white flowers emerging through the soil. He confidently named different flowers he spotted and shared his knowledge with those around him.

“I’m amazed with the size of the garden and the variety of plants it holds,” he said, clearly impressed by the surroundings.

Another heartwarming moment saw Mary Chapman from the Gade community enjoying a long-awaited tour of the garden. At 99 years young, Mary was delighted to spend time outdoors and was seen having a productive and enjoyable visit, taking in the sights and fresh spring air.

Resident Joan Brown also expressed her excitement, saying, “Look how beautiful and amazing our daffodils are! We should plant daffodils around all of the trees.” Dermot Kelly added, “What lovely daffodils!”

Talha Ali, Wellbeing Coordinator, said, “Seeing the residents so happy and engaged with the garden is truly rewarding. Projects like this bring everyone together and brighten the whole home.”

Following this success, the Wellbeing Team and residents have planned their next gardening activity: planting more daffodil bulbs around all of the trees in the garden and at the entrance of River Court Care Home in Watford, Hertfordshire, to create an even more vibrant and welcoming display.

The success of this gardening initiative highlights the joy and wellbeing that horticultural activities can bring to residents, while also adding a splash of colour and fragrance to the care home environment.
