Godden Lodge Care Home in Benfleet, Essex, is proud to celebrate Janet Welch, aged 77, who became part of Godden Lodge’s community on 19th June 2024, bringing with her a lifetime of talent, creativity, and stories woven into every stitch of her incredible dressmaking career spanning over 60 years.
Inspired by her talented Aunt Elsie and Aunt Glad, Janet began her journey as a dressmaker at the young age of 15. She apprenticed with the renowned couture company
Garners, mastering the art of crafting elegant evening gowns and intricate bridal wear. Though she briefly worked for a wedding manufacturer, her heart brought her back to Garners, where she stayed until she married and later took on computer work at Birds Eye. Even as a mother, Janet remained dedicated to her craft, making time to create beautiful garments part-time.
Janet’s husband recalls her most challenging creation, a stunning gold-braided jacket and navy outfit made especially for a memorable cruise to Iceland. This outfit, like many of her pieces, reflects her impeccable craftsmanship and timeless taste.
“I don't like modern fashion at all,” Janet says.
“Clothes are not made how they used to be.”
Over the years, Janet made countless prom and wedding dresses, always guided by the principle she offers to young aspiring dressmakers today:
“Always check the stitching.”
Although Janet didn’t pass her sewing skills on within the family, her legacy lives on through her garments. She is particularly proud of a vibrant red prom dress she crafted for her granddaughter, which is now proudly displayed in our reception.
To honour Janet's remarkable talent, Godden Lodge is currently showcasing three of her handmade dresses in their reception area, accompanied by descriptions and photographs for all residents, visitors, and families to enjoy. The display stands as a tribute to her lifelong dedication to her craft and the joy her creations have brought to so many.
Janet and her husband travelled the world together, and in every destination, she would seek out local fabric shops, testament to her enduring passion for textiles and design.
Lewis Chester, Home Manager at HC-One’s Godden Lodge Care Home said:
