Godden Lodge Care Home in Benfleet, Essex, part of HC-One, is delighted to welcome 94-year-old Frank Arthur Reynolds, who recently joined the home’s warm and welcoming community on 7th May 2025, to be reunited with his beloved wife, already a resident.
Frank, who has lived an extraordinary life filled with creativity, compassion, and culture, brings with him not only a fascinating personal story but also a deep love for painting, a passion he has pursued for over 20 years.
Inspired by his lifelong admiration for professional painters, Frank has embraced painting as a hobby in retirement, now enjoying the creative freedom that comes with having more time. Landscapes are his favourite subjects, and his most cherished piece features a tranquil woodland stream.
“I can hear the water rushing when I look at the painting,” he said with a smile.
A former graphic designer in Canada and interior designer in London, Frank has always been immersed in the arts in one form or another. He has also been an active member of the Salvation Army throughout his life, travelling widely with their brass band before finally settling back in England.
Now a valued member of the Godden Lodge family, Frank continues to find joy and meaning through his art.
“Painting gives me a great sense of satisfaction and an element of success,” he shared. He credits British artist Hazel Soan as a key inspiration in his work.
Residents and visitors to Godden Lodge can enjoy Frank’s talent firsthand, as several of his paintings are proudly displayed in the home's reception area. Though he prefers not to teach at this time, Frank hopes his work brings pleasure to those who view it.
“Painting helps me retain my skills, and it passes the time in a way that feels worthwhile,” he added.
Currently working on a new landscape piece, Frank has this advice for anyone considering picking up a paintbrush: “Keep painting.”
At Godden Lodge, Frank’s artistic journey is celebrated and supported. Home Manager Lewis Chester said:
“We are so proud to showcase Frank’s beautiful work. His creativity brings joy to our community, and we’re honoured to help support his passion for painting.”
Frank summed it up best: “My love of painting continues to give myself and others pleasure.”
