Residents and colleagues at HC-One’s Ebor Court Care Home in York, North Yorkshire, have come together to support children in need this festive season, inspired by one resident’s heartfelt Christmas wish.
Shirley Jones, a much-loved resident at Ebor Court, shared with Lifestyle Manager Denise Cooper that she wanted to “help the children of the world this Christmas.” Deeply moved by the wish, Denise worked closely with Shirley to turn her idea into a meaningful community initiative.
Together, they joined the Samaritans’ Christmas Shoebox Appeal, creating and sending off 11 gift-filled shoeboxes for children around the globe. But Shirley didn’t want to stop there. With support from Denise and the rest of the home, she helped launch a Christmas toy collection to support local families in York.
All donated toys will be distributed to children in need through York foodbanks, as well as delivered directly to York Hospital to bring festive cheer to young patients.
Lifestyle Manager Denise Cooper said:
“Taking in this Christmas wish from Shirley has been truly special. She is often moved by television reports showing children around the world in need, and it deeply touched her heart. Fulfilling Shirley’s wish means so much, not only to her, but to all of us as part of our commitment to making residents’ wishes come true.”
Home Manager Yvonne Penrose added:
“It’s moments like these that remind us how powerful it is to honour the hopes and dreams of those in our care. Shirley’s Christmas wish has touched the hearts of so many residents, colleagues, and families. It has been heart-warming to see the generosity and kindness in every donation.”
Members of the local community who would like to support the project are warmly invited to donate wrapped Christmas toys, clearly labelled with the child’s name and age, to: Ebor Court Care Home, Nether Poppleton, York, YO26 6RB.
All donations must be received by Friday 19th December.
