Geordie Day at Needham CourtResidents at Needham Court, residential and residential dementia care home, situated in Jarrow, have recently celebrated being a Geordie.

What is a ‘Geordie’?

Well, a Geordie is a person from Tyneside in the north-east of England!

At Needham Court the Residents were very excited to have a Geordie themed day. Lots of activities took place and the Residents had lots of fun.

A lovely lady, called Linda, from the local community came to the home to give a talk all about the history and culture of the area. She spoke about people who lived in the area. She even enjoyed eating a stottie cake from Greggs with ham and pease pudding for tea. Everyone loved Linda and thought she was great!

The Residents thoroughly enjoyed their Geordie tea. Betty, a Resident, remarked, “I love stottie cakes and its has been ages since I have had one.”

It was also discovered that one of the Residents, Mary Dodd has written a book of Geordie poems all about two characters, Geordie and Lizzie. Mary wrote the book to raise funds for Diabetes UK. Mary is very proud of her book and has dedicated it to her family.

The Residents loved that Mary had written all of the poems, and that is must have taken her so long to create the book!

Linda, the guest speaker, said, “How amazing that Mary wrote all of these poems, and they are published in a book!”

The Residents also enjoyed a quiz, themed around the north-east of England.

Additionally, as part of the day a few Geordie sayings were printed out and the Residents took turns to read them out! The first one was ‘wor lass is up a height man’ meaning my wife is mad! Another saying was ‘Howay man, lets gan doon the toon for some belta scran’ which translates too, come on man let’s go to Newcastle for some amazing food!

The Residents even watched some old Geordie TV programmes. Elaine, a Resident, said, “I remember watching Auf Wiedersehen, Pet in the 80’s and I have loved watching it today.”

Joann Mills, Care Home Manager, commented, “We have some very talented people living at Needham Court, Mary’s work is amazing! People from other regions don’t realise that the north-east has beautiful countryside and amazing coast lines.”
